Cloudron and blitz.cloud both run open-source apps for you, but Cloudron is a management layer you install on your own server, while blitz.cloud is a complete hosting service. Cloudron is the better choice when you want full control over your infrastructure and don't mind managing your own server. blitz.cloud fits when you want managed hosting without the operational overhead.

## At a glance

| | blitz.cloud | Cloudron |
|---|---|---|
| Company | BlitzWorks UG, Regensburg, Germany | Self-hosted (you run it on your own server) |
| How you pay | A plan for the whole account: free, or Pro at 7 EUR a month including VAT | Licence for self-hosted: Free (a small number of apps), Pro €15/month, Max €25/month |
| Infrastructure | Managed: one EU data centre, we run everything | Self-hosted: you rent a server elsewhere and manage it |
| Start without paying | Free plan with 5 apps and 512 MB memory, no card, no end date. Apps sleep after 30 minutes without visitors | Free licence for a small number of apps, but you pay for the server separately (cost depends on your hosting provider) |
| Cheapest always-on app | Pro for the whole account: 7 EUR a month, 50 apps and 5 databases included | Free licence (limited to a small number of apps), plus server rental costs ($4–10/month for a basic VPS) |
| Apps | 5 on free, 50 on Pro, from 96 store apps | Not verified how many apps are in the catalogue; you install from their store on your own server |
| Your own code | Yes: public Docker images, and GitHub repositories that go online on every push | Limited; Cloudron is built for its app catalogue, not custom code |
| Managed databases | PostgreSQL, MariaDB and Redis, with automatic nightly backups | Depends on the app: databases run inside each app where needed |
| Backups | Databases every night (7 nights on free, 30 on Pro), app files every night on Pro | Included in all plans: per-app backups. Max plan allows backups to multiple locations |
| Own domain | On Pro or a Pro app | Yes, included |
| Server management | We handle OS patches, updates, monitoring, TLS certificates | You manage updates, patches, TLS, monitoring on your own server |

## Where Cloudron is the better choice

Cloudron is for people who want to own their infrastructure and are comfortable managing a VPS themselves. The licence is cheap (€15 or €25 per month), or free for a small number of apps, and you choose where your server lives and which cloud provider to use. You get full admin access to your server and can install extra software alongside the apps. If you want complete control and don't mind the operational work, or if you already rent a server elsewhere, Cloudron's management layer is a way to turn that server into an app platform.

## Where blitz.cloud fits better

- You want managed hosting without managing a server yourself. No patches, no TLS, no monitoring — we handle it.
- You want to try apps without paying anything or renting a server. Free plan needs no card and no infrastructure cost.
- You run several apps. Pro is one price for the account: 7 EUR a month for 50 apps, 5 databases and 4 GB memory.
- You want automatic nightly backups that you can restore from the dashboard.
- You want a German company, one EU data centre, and predictable pricing with no surprise server bills.
