Fly.io is the better choice when you need your containers in many regions close to users, arm64 or fine-grained control over machines, and you're happy to pay per use from the start. blitz.cloud fits when you want to host containers and a database for free in the EU without a credit card. Fly.io has no free tier: the trial ends after 2 machine hours or 7 days.

## At a glance

| | blitz.cloud | Fly.io |
|---|---|---|
| Company | BlitzWorks UG, Regensburg, Germany. No US parent | Fly.io, Inc., San Francisco, US |
| EU regions | One region in the EU today, more planned | Amsterdam, Stockholm, Paris, Frankfurt (plus London) |
| Free tier | 5 apps, 512 MB memory, 10 GB storage, one database. Apps sleep after 15 minutes without visitors and wake on the next one. No expiry, no card | No free tier. Trial of 2 machine hours or 7 days without a card, machines stop after 5 minutes. Adding a card ends the trial |
| Cheapest paid plan | Pro, 7 EUR a month including VAT | Pay per use. Smallest machine (shared CPU, 256 MB) about $2.02 a month in Amsterdam |
| An app that stays awake, with a database | Pro, 7 EUR a month for your whole account, up to 5 databases | About $40 a month: smallest machine about $2.02 plus managed Postgres from $38 (checked 14 September 2026) |
| Run a finished Docker image | Yes, public Docker Hub images, amd64 | Yes, with `fly deploy --image` |
| Git push deploys | Yes, after you connect GitHub, private repositories included | No built-in, GitHub Actions instead |
| Managed databases | PostgreSQL 17, MariaDB 11.4, Redis (Valkey 8), with nightly backups | Managed Postgres from $38 a month |
| Custom domains and HTTPS | HTTPS on your blitz.cloud subdomains. Custom domains on Pro | First 10 certificates per organisation free, then $0.10 a month each |

## Where Fly.io is the better choice

Fly.io runs your container in the regions you choose, and moving it closer to users is a command. If latency outside Europe matters, a single data centre in the EU can't compete. You get direct control over machines, volumes and networking through `flyctl`, with private images and a mature CLI workflow.

Custom domains and certificates work now. The pay-per-use model gets cheap at small sizes once you're paying anyway, and it scales well past what a free plan offers.

## Where blitz.cloud fits better

- You want to run something without entering a card, and keep it running after a week.
- You want a database included. A managed Postgres on Fly.io starts at $38 a month; on blitz.cloud one database is part of the free plan.
- You'd rather click through a dashboard than learn a CLI, or install a store app like Uptime Kuma or Linkding in a few clicks.
- You want every push to GitHub to go online without writing a CI workflow for it.
- A German operator and an EU data centre matter more to you than a choice of regions.

## Moving from Fly.io to blitz.cloud

Fly.io apps already run from images, so the move is mostly about the registry. Push the image to Docker Hub as a public amd64 image, make sure it listens on a port such as 8080, and deploy it. Volumes don't copy over automatically; move the data yourself. See [deploy a Docker image](https://blitz.cloud/docs/deploy-docker-image/).

If the image is built from a GitHub repository, you can instead connect GitHub and let blitz.cloud build every push. The image can also stay on any public registry, such as ghcr.io, rather than Docker Hub. See [deploy a GitHub project](https://blitz.cloud/docs/deploy-from-github/).
