Railway is the better choice when you want database templates including MySQL and MongoDB, regions in the US and Asia, and usage-based pricing that starts at $5 a month. blitz.cloud fits when you want a free plan with room for 5 apps, a managed database and hosting in the EU by a German company. Railway's Free plan gives $1 a month of usage, no custom domains and no choice of region.

## At a glance

| | blitz.cloud | Railway |
|---|---|---|
| Company | BlitzWorks UG, Regensburg, Germany. No US parent | Railway Corporation, San Francisco, US |
| EU regions | One region in the EU today, more planned | EU West, Amsterdam (others: California, Virginia, Singapore). Choosing a region is not available on the Free plan |
| Free tier | 5 apps, 512 MB memory, 10 GB storage, one database. Apps sleep after 15 minutes without visitors and wake on the next one. No expiry, no card | One-time $5 trial for 30 days without a card, then a Free plan with $1 a month, 0.5 GB RAM and 1 vCPU per service, 0.5 GB volume |
| Cheapest paid plan | Pro, 7 EUR a month including VAT | Hobby, $5 a month including $5 of usage |
| An app that stays awake, with a database | Pro, 7 EUR a month for your whole account, up to 5 databases | Hobby, $5 a month including $5 of usage; memory and CPU beyond that are billed by use (checked 14 September 2026) |
| Run a finished Docker image | Yes, public Docker Hub images, amd64 | Yes, from Docker Hub, GHCR, Quay and GitLab |
| Git push deploys | Yes, after you connect GitHub, private repositories included | Yes |
| Managed databases | PostgreSQL 17, MariaDB 11.4, Redis (Valkey 8), with nightly backups | Postgres, MySQL, Redis and MongoDB as templates |
| Custom domains and HTTPS on free | HTTPS on your blitz.cloud subdomains. Custom domains on Pro | Custom domains: 1 during the trial, 0 on Free, 2 on Hobby |

## Where Railway is the better choice

Railway's developer experience is its strength. Connect a repository, and services, databases and environment variables show up on one canvas that redeploys on push. blitz.cloud redeploys on push too once you connect GitHub, but Railway offers MongoDB and MySQL, which blitz.cloud doesn't.

Usage-based billing also suits apps with uneven traffic, and the Hobby plan is cheap for what it includes. Railway has regions in the US and Asia too. If you need any of these today, Railway is the more complete product.

## Where blitz.cloud fits better

- You want to stay on a free plan for months: 5 apps and 512 MB of memory shared between them, not $1 of usage.
- You want your data in the EU. On Railway's Free plan you can't pick the Amsterdam region.
- You want store apps like Ghost, Vaultwarden or n8n installed in a few clicks, each under its own subdomain with HTTPS.
- Your project is a web front end, an API and a worker in one repository with a compose file. On blitz.cloud they run as one app with one address, and a push builds them together.
- You prefer a German operator without a US parent.

## Moving from Railway to blitz.cloud

Services that run from a Docker image move directly: make the image public on Docker Hub, check it listens on a port such as 8080, and deploy it. For a Postgres database, create one on blitz.cloud and import a dump. Railway's MongoDB templates have no equivalent here. See [deploy a Docker image](https://blitz.cloud/docs/deploy-docker-image/) and [deploy an app with PostgreSQL](https://blitz.cloud/guides/deploy-app-with-postgres/).

Services that Railway builds from a GitHub repository build here from the same repository once you connect GitHub. If there's no Dockerfile, blitz.cloud writes one. A public image can also come from ghcr.io, Quay or another public registry instead of Docker Hub. See [deploy a GitHub project](https://blitz.cloud/docs/deploy-from-github/).
