Vercel is the better choice for Next.js and frontend teams that want preview URLs for every branch and a global CDN. blitz.cloud fits people who want a free place in the EU that doesn't expire, for containers, self-hosted apps and a database, run by a company without a US parent. If your project is commercial and small, note that Vercel's free Hobby plan is for personal, non-commercial use only.

## At a glance

| | blitz.cloud | Vercel |
|---|---|---|
| Company | BlitzWorks UG, Regensburg, Germany. No US parent | Vercel Inc., California, US |
| EU regions | One region in the EU today, more planned | Functions in Stockholm, Paris, Dublin, Frankfurt (plus London). Default is Washington. CDN is always global |
| Free tier | 5 apps, 512 MB memory, 10 GB storage, one database. Apps sleep after 15 minutes without visitors and wake on the next one. No expiry, no card | Hobby: personal, non-commercial use only. 4 CPU-hours, 1M function calls, 100 GB transfer. One function region |
| Cheapest paid plan | Pro, 7 EUR a month including VAT | Pro, $20 per developer seat a month |
| Run a finished Docker image | Yes, public Docker Hub images, amd64 | Not documented. What is documented: a `Dockerfile.vercel` is built on deploy and runs as a Function that scales down after 5 minutes without traffic |
| Git push deploys | Yes, after you connect GitHub, private repositories included | Yes |
| Managed databases | PostgreSQL 17, MariaDB 11.4, Redis (Valkey 8), with nightly backups | No own database apart from Blob storage. Postgres via Marketplace partners such as Neon and Supabase |
| Custom domains and HTTPS on free | HTTPS on your blitz.cloud subdomains. Custom domains on Pro | Yes, 50 domains per project |

## Where Vercel is the better choice

Vercel is built around Next.js, and it shows. Server components, ISR, image optimisation and middleware work without configuration, and new Next.js features land there first. Every pull request gets a preview URL, which is hard to give up once your team is used to it.

The CDN is global. If your visitors are spread across continents, pages load faster from Vercel than from a single data centre in the EU. The platform is mature, well documented and runs very large sites, and paid plans come with the support and team features a company expects. None of that exists on blitz.cloud today.

## Where blitz.cloud fits better

- You want your app and its data in the EU with a German operator, and don't want to configure regions to get there.
- You run a container or a self-hosted app, not a frontend. Ghost, Vaultwarden, n8n or your own API in a Docker image run as long-lived processes, not functions.
- You need a real database next to the app, included in the free plan, backed up every night.

## Moving from Vercel to blitz.cloud

A Next.js app moves if it can run as a Docker image, for example with `output: "standalone"` or a static export. Put the Dockerfile in your repository, connect your GitHub account on blitz.cloud and pick the repository, and every push to the branch goes online. Without a Dockerfile, blitz.cloud writes one. You can also build the image yourself and deploy it from a public registry. Features tied to Vercel's platform, such as preview deployments and its image optimisation service, don't come along. The steps are in [migrate from Vercel to an EU host](https://blitz.cloud/guides/migrate-from-vercel-to-eu/) and [deploy a GitHub project](https://blitz.cloud/docs/deploy-from-github/).
