Code Server pricing in 2026

What paid cloud IDEs cost in 2026, what self-hosting Code Server yourself costs, and what it costs free or always-on on blitz.cloud.

Updated

Code Server is VS Code running in a browser; there's no official "Code Server Cloud" from the author. The services people compare it to are cloud IDEs like GitHub Codespaces (which runs VS Code in the cloud) or cloud development environments. On blitz.cloud you can run Code Server free, with the usual free-plan limits, or keep it awake on Pro so your editor never sleeps.

GitHub Codespaces

Checked on github.com/features/codespaces, 2026-10-19. GitHub offers cloud development environments with VS Code included.

GitHub Codespaces includes 60 hours per month on a 2-core machine (120 core-hours) and 15 GB of storage per month for free. Beyond that, usage is paid as you go; pricing per hour and per GB storage is available on GitHub's billing page.

Self-hosting Code Server yourself

Code Server's source is public under the MIT licence, free for any use including commercial. What it costs instead: a server you pick and pay for whether you use it or not, installing Docker, setting up HTTPS yourself, and keeping backups and updates current.

Running your own Code Server on blitz.cloud

You can run Code Server on blitz.cloud free of charge. Install Code Server from the App Store; it comes with its own HTTPS address and 5 GB of storage for your code and projects, and it needs no database. On the free plan it sleeps after 30 minutes without a visit, and while it sleeps your editor stops responding.

On Pro, 7 EUR a month, you can keep Code Server awake so your editor is always ready to work.

It runs in the medium resource size, 256 MB of memory reserved with room to grow to 1 GB. We don't have a timed install figure for Code Server yet; it has no database to wait on.

Is it free / does it run 24/7 / do I need a card

Is Code Server free? The software is free either way. GitHub Codespaces's free tier offers 60 hours a month; beyond that it charges usage-based rates. Running Code Server yourself on blitz.cloud's free plan costs nothing.

Does it run 24/7? GitHub Codespaces can, if you stay within or pay for usage. On blitz.cloud's free plan Code Server sleeps when nobody visits and your editor stops responding; on Pro it stays awake.

Do I need a card? blitz.cloud's free plan needs no card. GitHub Codespaces's free tier needs no card, but paid usage requires one.

Keep your app awake.

On Pro an app answers at any hour, so schedules run on time and webhooks arrive straight away. 7 EUR a month for all your apps. Try it free for 14 days: starting doesn't need payment details, and if you don't add them before it ends, nothing is charged.
