Vaultwarden pricing in 2026

What Bitwarden's own paid plans cost, what self-hosting Vaultwarden yourself costs, and what it costs free or always-on on blitz.cloud, with a dated overview.

Updated

Bitwarden's own Premium plan costs 1.65 USD a month, billed annually. Vaultwarden, the self-hosted server that speaks the same protocol, is free software, but self-hosting it yourself still costs a server and a backup plan. On blitz.cloud you can run Vaultwarden free, with the usual free-plan limits, or get its files backed up every night on Pro.

Bitwarden's own plans

Checked on bitwarden.com/pricing, 2026-10-17:

PlanPrice
Premium1.65 USD/mo, billed annually at 19.80 USD/year
Families3.99 USD/mo, billed annually at 47.88 USD/year, up to 6 users

Bitwarden also has a free tier with core features; Vaultwarden is a separate, community-run server that implements the same protocol, not a Bitwarden product.

Self-hosting Vaultwarden yourself

Vaultwarden is free, open-source software (AGPL-3.0). Running it yourself costs no licence fee, but it's still a server you pick and pay for, HTTPS you set up, and backups and updates you keep current. A password vault is also the one app where losing your own backup really hurts, since there's no password reset that doesn't involve the master password itself.

Vaultwarden on blitz.cloud

You can run Vaultwarden on blitz.cloud free of charge. The App Store installs it with its own HTTPS address, port and an admin token already set, and the official Bitwarden apps and browser extensions work with it (see self-host a password manager). On the free plan it sleeps after 30 minutes without a visit, and shares your plan's 512 MB memory and 10 GB storage with your other apps.

On the free plan only its database is backed up, not the data file Vaultwarden keeps in its own folder; on Pro, 7 EUR a month, app files are copied every night and kept for 30 nights, and the app can stay awake.

Our own numbers, measured 2026-10-17: Vaultwarden installs and comes online in about 62 seconds at the median, 14 seconds at the fastest. It runs in the small resource size, 128 MB of memory reserved with room to grow to 512 MB, which is plenty for a family's vault.

Is it free / does it run 24/7 / do I need a card

Is Vaultwarden free? The software is free either way. Bitwarden's own Premium plan is 1.65 USD a month. Running Vaultwarden yourself on blitz.cloud's free plan costs nothing, with the limits above.

Does it run 24/7? Bitwarden's own service does. Self-hosting Vaultwarden yourself does too, if your server stays up. On blitz.cloud's free plan it sleeps when nobody visits; on Pro it stays awake.

Do I need a card? Bitwarden's paid plans need one. blitz.cloud's free plan does not.

On the free plan only databases are backed up. Pro copies the files your apps keep every night and keeps 30 nights, with a restore you can undo. 7 EUR a month, and the first month back if it isn't for you.
